Sisters on the Frontlines: Catholic Women Leading Healthcare in Rural Kenya
Across the vast and often underserved rural landscapes of Kenya, Catholic Sisters remain an irreplaceable pillar of healthcare delivery. From the arid North to the lush Western highlands, they operate dispensaries, maternity units, and community health programs that reach thousands of families who would otherwise have no access to medical care.
Sister Mary Wanjiku, who has led the St. Francis Health Centre in Laikipia for over two decades, describes her work as a "living sacrament" — a tangible expression of the Gospel through the healing ministry. "Every patient who walks through these doors is Christ coming to us," she says.
CNCS recently partnered with several congregations to document their healthcare apostolates through video stories and written features, giving these hidden heroes a platform they have long deserved.
